DS9 is the new designation for the Cardassian station that once overlooked the pillaged world of Bajor. With the withdrawal of the Cardassians, the Federation moved in, and the likeable Commander Benjamin Sisko took command. He has his hands full rebuilding the station and getting Federation crew and the religious but fiery Bajorans to work together.
The emergence of the galaxy's only stable wormhole, right next door, opening a bridge across the galaxy to the Gamma Quadrant, means that DS9 becomes one of the most important hubs in the sector - bringing all manner of folk in and out of the wormhole. The aliens who live in its nether realm also have s special destiny for Sisko.
Deep Space Nine was the first Star Trek series to introduce arcing - long form stories that went far beyond season-end cliffhangers or double episodes. The relationships between the characters drive the show, and the final half of the seven season run is dominated by an intergalactic war of staggering scale and complexity.
